The Dallas Cowboys are getting closer to hiring offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer as the team's new head coach… much to the dismay of many fans.
The Cowboys went 7-10 in a terrible 2024 season that led to Jerry Jones parting ways with HC Mike McCarthy, and the search has since been on for his replacement.
While many other teams are hiring exciting new names to lead their franchise, fans have criticized Jones and the Cowboys amid reports that they are close to confirming Schottenheimer's appointment.
The 51-year-old has spent two seasons as an OC in Dallas, leading a rudderless offense that won just seven games in the current campaign.
Latest reports from the respected local writer. Clarence Hill Jr states The Cowboys and Schottenheimer are expected to 'cross the finish line' in the coming hours, with a deal expected to be announced no later than Friday.
The impending decision has sparked fury from fans and media commentators alike, with Fox's Colin Cowherd claiming controversial owner Jones is “lost at sea”.
Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer appears poised to take over as head coach.
Many fans have criticized Jerry Jones' decision to hire his next head coach from within.
In a three-minute monologue on his show, Cowherd said: 'We are witnessing the fall of a great American institution. He's not even interviewing for other jobs.
“I've never been a head coach, I've never been a top candidate for a head coach. He's bounced around the league, dad was a legend… good guy, but 7-10 football teams don't leave a coach and then they hire the offensive coordinator who doesn't call the plays.'
On social media, fans agreed, with one joking, “Say what you want, but the Cowboys hiring Brian Schottenheimer would be electric.” I mean, that's what my bathtub is about to be once I drop the toaster.
Another wrote: “If Jerry really promotes Brian Schottenheimer to head coach, my wallet will still be on strike.” No tickets, no Cowboys gear, no tailgating, no desire to go to training camp, nothing. Being a Cowboys fan is becoming an endurance test.”
Mike McCarthy (right, pictured with QB Dak Prescott) was fired at the end of the 2024 season.
One more added: 'Is Jerry awake? If they hire him, don't include me for the 2025 Cowboys.
Schottenheimer has bounced around the NFL during his coaching career, starting as an assistant in 1997 with the St Louis Rams.
He's been an OC with the Jets, Rams, Seahawks and Cowboys, and in college with Georgia, while also moving down to become a quarterbacks coach with the Colts and Redskins.
His father, Marty, is a member of the Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame, won the 2004 NFL Coach of the Year award with the Chargers and spent nine years in charge at Arrowhead.
