The love story behind Madison Keys' victory at the Australian Open

And what a victory it was for the American, who claimed her first Grand Slam title on Saturday afternoon by defeating defending champion and world number one Aryna Sabalenka.

Keys also had to claim victory the hard way, beating Danielle Collins, Elena Rybakina, Elina Svitolina and world No. 2 Iga Swiatek to reach the final of the tournament, her second Grand Slam final.

Keys, coached by her husband Bjorn Fratangelo, credited her life partner for helping her revive her tennis career.

Keys had burst onto the tennis scene at the age of 14 and was being supported by stardom during the early years of her career.

But injury problems and drops in form have hampered Keys' attempts to win titles in the past and prompted her to change coaches.

Fratangelo, a former ATP top 100 player, slowed down his tennis career to begin coaching Keys in 2023, before getting married in November 2024.

“I have the best team,” she said while holding the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup on Saturday.

“They really believed in me in times when I didn't believe in myself and basically helped me completely rebuild after some pretty serious injuries last year.”

“And I have the best, most understanding husband in the whole world, who didn't even want to train me and I said, 'Please come with me.'
