When Anthony Gordon scored the goal that would have crashed any website that still offered trains and airplanes to London on the third weekend of March, he picked up a black and white scarf and hit him above his head in front of the gallowgate end.
The end was in message, since the locals had brought those scarves to greet, not to wear. No additional layers were needed here, you see. Not in the middle of an unbridled noise oven and feverish anticipation. Nerves? Those were started in contact as fast as Arsenal was.
It may have been a bitter February night, but this was in black and white from the beginning. A naked chest geordie seemed to sweat at the final stages. Or were those tears? It was that type of occasion, full of emotion.
They knew what was at stake, a place in a Wembley final and the possibility of ending a domestic trophy drought that has spread to the biblical definition of a lifetime: three years of score and ten. Their prayers were answered. It is not that Newcastle will need heavenly intervention. Eddie Howe and his players did the work themselves, during a first brave and brilliant match in northern London and a bold and bustling return here.
By the time the Toon Army, 'Mikel Arteta, must be the ball', the Arsenal chief had said that it was the fault of the defeat in the first game, they were having a lot of fun. It was 2-0 at night, 4-0 together, and while stirring those scarves in one hand, they looked for London hotels in the other.
This, however, was the easy part. Easier than it should have been, in reality, since Arsenal had made noises on Tyneside and score another five goals, as they did against Manchester City on Sunday. Five? They did not achieve one in three hours.

But for Newcastle, the difficult part is to bring that cover home. They have done this before, they negotiated semifinals. Five times, in fact, since the last domestic trophy in 1955. and five times they have been beaten in a Wembley final.
With the tastes of Gordon and Alexander Isak, they will never have a better chance. Isak didn't score, but he and Gordon were the best players in the game. Arsenal does not have an Isak. Nor did they have a Sven Botman, Sandro Tonali or Bruno Guimaraes. For a man, Newcastle was better, as they were in the Emirates.
Howe had promised to play aggressive and aggressive football on the eve of the game, urging her players not to change her focus. Then he named five on the back for the first time this season. The loss of Joelinton due to a knee injury, his aggravating man in chief, was an irritation that Newcastle's boss could have done without him. He felt like a heavyweight that he was asked to remove the oral protector moments before the bell.
But Howe was good with his word, his team was balanced. They had the ball on the network in four minutes, Isak sweeping the upper corner, and St James celebrated as if the knockout coup had landed. An off -game VAR lifted the canvas arsenal.
Even so, you wondered which team was chasing the two -goal deficit. While Newcastle went for death, Arsenal tried to kill the clock. The tactic, clearly, was to survive the early flood of the blows at home. They failed.
Just when they began to show some ambition, to guide themselves, they obtained a bloody nose. Martin Odegaard reached the post at one end, with the possibility that he should have noted, and 30 seconds later Jacob Murphy hit the bottom of the network in the other, with the possibility of having every right to get lost.
Anthony Gordon, as he had done for Isak's goal, left the Swedish of course. He broke the post of post and the bar and the rebound introduced Murphy what seemed like an ugly angle. But for those behind the final goal of the Leages, preparing to bend down, it was a beautiful view when the end cushioned the home.
This tie was much more, but Isak versus Kai Hvertz felt like an apt microcosm. The Arsenal was terrified of Isak in the first leg and those in the back played as if they suffered from PTSD. The goal that had attributed the warning of his threat behind, another run of the shoulder of William Saliba led to the first game. I wasn't alone on the back, I was also causing short and wide problems.

Havertz, meanwhile, was reserved for a petulant thrust in Bruno Guimaraes in his most notable act of the first half. It is not surprising that Saliba and Gabriel did not seem able to deal with Isak, if containing Hvertz is the reach of his effort in the training field.
But while the German fell short in the attack, his teammates in defense were equally guilty. It was appropriate of the poor quality of Arsenal that the objective of ensuring absolutely Newcastle's victory was a gift.
David Raya tried to play from behind, but gave Declan Rice a ball with blue lights. That was a green light for Fabian Schar, sliding to steal from the midfielder's toe before Gordon went beyond a sad line.
It was then that the scorer picked up the scarf, threw the field in celebration. Newcastle goes to Wembley, and the Toon army will march there if necessary.
