Manchester United has confirmed that Lisandro Martínez has damaged the cross ligament on his left knee after the Argentine defender was taken in Sunday's defeat against Crystal Palace in Old Trafford.

United has not put a time scale in Martínez's rehabilitation, but it is understood that the 27 -year -old could be out of action for up to six months.

A club statement said: 'Manchester United can confirm that Lisandro Martínez suffered an injury in his ligament in Sunday against Crystal Palace.

The World Cup winner had already lost more than three months of last season due to complications with a broken metatarsal suffered at the end of his first campaign in England.
