Ruben Amorim opens why he eliminated Ruud Van Nistelrooy from the coaching staff when he took Man United's job before the meeting with Leicester Boss

  • Ruud van Nistelrooy won three of his four games as interim Man United Boss
  • But he lost his job as soon as Ruben Amorim became Old Trafford's manager
  • Listen now: Everything is starting! Does Premier League really need to look at goal celebrations?

Ruben Amorim insists that it was the right decision to leave Ruud Van Nistelrooy out of his background in Manchester United, but admits that he hurts his pride to know that the Dutchman has a better record than him in Old Trafford this season.

Van Nistelrooy arrived as an Erik Ten Hag assistant in the summer and intervened as an interim manager after the Dutchman was fired in the end of October, winning three and attracting one of his four games in charge.

Amorim decided that there was no room for the former United striker when he was appointed chief coach in November and brought his team of Sporting Lisbon coaches, but the 39 -year -old has lost eight of his 19 games in charge.

Van Nistelrooy returns to Old Trafford as administrator of Leicester City on Friday night when United faces his rivals of the Premier League in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

But Amorim does not regret, claiming that it would have been incorrect to install Van Nistelrooy over his own attendees or expect the 48 -year -old man to accept a junior role in the staff.

“It was not a difficult situation, because I was very clear to me that I had to explain,” he said. 'He is a football man and understands this situation. I have my team and my staff. I prefer to work with a team that brought me here.

'I could keep Ruud because it was good for me or something popular. But I will not put Ruud in front of my boys, whatever happens.

'Then I had to put a person like Ruud at the end of the hierarchy in my staff, and I think that was not right in Ruud.

'To show respect to Ruud, I was really clear with him. I explained that I have my team and I will continue in the same way, and I will not put a guy like Ruud, a legend of this club, at the end of the hierarchy in the staff.

“This was the clear decision, really simple to explain, and took it as a type of class as it is.”

When asked about the fact that both Nistelrooy and Ten Hag have a better record than him in United this season, Amorim replied: 'They were better than me in the training of this team. It is really difficult because I am a very proud guy, but I usually take it.

'It is not uncomfortable. He (Van Nistelrooy) knew the team and worked with the team. I made some decisions that are really difficult, sometimes create problems, friction in the team.

“I am trying to help players see the game as I see, to improve performance and also the results.”

Van Nistelrooy revealed that he will put adolescents Jeremy Monga, 15, and Jake Evans, 16, at the bank, saying: “It is an occasion when the opportunities for players can happen.”
