A 37-year-old surfer was tragically killed this week in a shark attack in Australia, the authorities announced on Tuesday.
The Western Australia police said that the incident was held in Wharton Beach on Monday around 12.10 p.m.
Officials said they had recovered the man's surfboard immediately after the encounter – and it had bite traces. However, the body of the surfer has not yet been recovered.
“It is obviously heartbreaking,” Esperance Police Senior Sergeant Chris Taylor told reporters directly in front of one of the untouched entrances to the beach. “And the entire community of Esperance feels the pain.”
Several branches have the surfer as Steven Jeffrey Payne – a native melbourne. Taylor said on Tuesday that the man's family was “disturbed and tries to find out what happened yesterday”.
Unfortunately, the area is known for such situations … The Australian Broadcasting Corporation said that this week there was at least three deaths in connection with HAI in the region from 2017 to 2020.
Wharton Beach was closed on Monday after the incident – although the officials said they will rethink the opening later on Tuesday.
