Bourbon Street will return to normal just in time for Thursday's Sugar Bowl… The mayor of New Orleans expects full activity to take place before kickoff – a day after the terrorist attack in the new year.
The matchup between Georgia and Notre Dame, scheduled to take place Jan. 1 at Caesars Superdome, has been postponed in the wake of the tragedy that left 14 people dead … and while some officials have called for more time for the community to heal The game will take place on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. PT.
With thousands of football fans in town for the College Football Playoff contest, Mayor LaToya Cantrell told reporters that the famous French Quarter street will be available to those who want to watch the action from area venues.
Cantrell announced that cleanup on the street began early Thursday morning … and was completed around 8 a.m.
Cantrell said the city is confident the public will remain safe not only during the football game but also in the future.
Additional security measures will be put in place… officials will erect new barriers and hire more police officers to patrol the streets.
Earlier in the day, NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said her department will receive help from all levels of law enforcement … and they are treating Thursday's game as if it were the Super Bowl, which will be held in the same city in February.
As we previously reported, at least 14 people died afterwards Shamsud Din Jabbar drove in Pickup truck into the crowd early New Year's Day…and dozens were injured.
Jabbar was killed after he opened fire on police officers.
