Big day for Erik and Lyle Menendez…Relatives will meet with new Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman to discuss re-sentencing the brothers for the infamous murders of their parents decades ago.
Twenty family members of Jose and Kitty Menendez – who were shot to death by their children in 1989 – will sit down with Hochman today and ask the district attorney to reduce the sentences for Erik and Lyle.
As you know, the brothers were convicted of the murders in the second trial in 1996 and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Her first trial ended in a mistrial.
During today's meeting, family members will advocate for “a resentencing process that reflects the abuse, trauma and proven rehabilitation of Erik and Lyle over the past 35 years.”
The family also notes that Lyle and Erik have spent the decades behind bars “taking responsibility for their actions and making positive contributions to their community through immense personal growth.”
Back in October, then-LA District Attorney George Gascon held a press conference in which he announced he would ask a judge to convict the brothers.
But Gascogne lost his bid for re-election to Hochman, who has not yet said how he will feel about the resentencing.
The family's lawyers criticized Hochman late last year … for meeting with the lawyer of one family member who opposed the brothers' release.
A hearing is scheduled for later this month. Erik and Lyle's attorney, Mark Geragos, will not only be asking for his clients to be resentenced… he will be asking the judge to commute the sentence from murder to manslaughter, which would free Erik and Lyle immediately.
