Sunil Gavaskar was left 'perplexed' by the bizarre snub as Australia secured a big series win against India to regain the Border-Gavaskar trophy.

Indian cricket great Sunil Gavaskar was left baffled by the bizarre decision to omit him from Australia's trophy presentation after Pat Cummins' team beat India 3-1 in this summer's Test series.

Interestingly, Gavaskar, whose name even appears on the trophy, did not take part in the presentation on Sunday afternoon at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

As Australia cruised to a six-wicket victory, Gavaskar was 150 meters away from the trophy presentation.

Allan Border would take to the stage to present Cummins with the huge gold trophy, but Gavaskar was not present.

“I certainly would have loved to be there for the presentation,” he told The daily telegraph.

Later, Gavaskar made an interesting statement that if India did not win or draw the series, there would be no need.

“I was told right before the test started that that was going to be the situation,” he said, according to ABC sport.

'If India didn't win or draw the series, they wouldn't need me… I don't feel sad, but I do feel a little perplexed. “It’s the Border-Gavaskar trophy, we should both have been there.”

Gavaskar later added to The Daily Telegraph that “to me, it shouldn't matter that Australia won as far as the presentation is concerned.”

He admitted that the Cummins team had played the “best cricket” throughout the series and added: “I would have loved to present the trophy to my good friend Allan Border.”

A Cricket Australia spokesperson stated that the plan was for Border to present the trophy if Australia had won the title and Gavaskar would do the same honor if India had retained the title.

Still, Cricket Australia appeared to backtrack on the decision not to have Gavaskar present the award alongside Border.

“We recognize that it would have been preferable if AB and Sunil had been asked to take the stage,” a Cricket Australia spokesperson said.

After their ball-in-hand heroics in Melbourne, Australia's bowlers once again impressed in Sydney, with India being bowled out for 157 in their second innings.

Gavaskar had handed over the trophy to Rohit Sharma after India retained the title in 2023.

Scott Boland took six wickets, taking his score to 10 for the match, before Australia stormed back into the crease to claw their way to victory.

The result sees Australia qualify for the World Test Championship final at Lord's later this year, with Cummins' team taking on South Africa.
