Everton sacked Sean Dyche as manager just three hours before their FA Cup third round match against Peterborough United on Thursday night.
The Toffees are in another fight against relegation, but the timing of the expulsion will draw attention as it is so close to the start. They play at 7:45 p.m. and the news is given at 4:25 p.m.
Dyche leaves the club languishing one point above the relegation zone midway through the Premier League season.
The Merseyside side have collected 17 points from 19 matches so far this season, with the club winning just three of those games.
The 53-year-old was in the final months of his contract with Everton, but the hierarchy has decided to end his tenure now.
Dyche's last game in charge of the Goodison Park side was the 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon..

Speaking on Tuesday ahead of the FA Cup third round match against Peterborough United, Dyche was under no illusions that the club could have a succession plan in place.
“To be clear, at the end of the day, if you are a company of this size, succession planning should be part of your diligence,” he said.

“I've never questioned the fans here; if they choose to support me it will obviously help.”
