There is only one way I would like to see Marcus Smith and Fin Smith starting together for England and that is by playing with Marcus as a fly half and Fin as an inside centre.
Moving Marcus to the side is an interim solution. Something to do in an emergency. It is one of the best 10 in the world, but not one of the best 15 in the world.
By cutting and changing, you are losing the talent of one of your best players. If I were advising Marcus, I would tell him to stay at 10 and fight, for better or worse, even if it means ending up on the bench.
For all his talent, I still believe Marcus should be England's first-choice flyhalf.
Inside center is the position Steve Borthwick really needs to look at. The core combination of Ollie Lawrence and Henry Slade isn't working and it's time to try something different. The 10-12 axis is very important and if I'm brutally honest, England haven't had a 12 that's good enough to control our attacking play since Will Greenwood.
I always want a real player at 12 and Fin has all the attributes to be a world-class inside centre, adding another real attacking threat to what could be an incredible backline.
Marcus Smith remains England's best number 10 and should start in the next Six Nations
Smith is a top 10 player in the world, but he is not a top 15 player in the world for England.
Fin Smith has all the attributes to be a world-class inside center in England's best defensive line.
England have quality players in the back three and need ball-playing skills to bring them into the game. The change from 10 to 12 is much easier than 10 to 15, so I think Fin would be perfect.
Playing week after week in the 10th position for his club improves his ability to create a real threat in the 12th position. He doesn't look that big, but defensively he has shown that he has the ability to handle the physical side that an inside center needs. In fact, I'm sure you'd love the challenge.
Things need to speed up right now for England. They don't look like a team that would win a World Cup.
I'd like to see Fin starting in the centers alongside his clubmate Tommy Freeman.
Neither of them play in those positions for Northampton and I would like to see Borthwick trying to persuade the Saints coaches to help him as part of the new deal between club and country.
Even without George Furbank and Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, England have plenty of talent on their flanks. I want them to pick a team that will make Ireland coach Simon Easterby think, “Wow, they've got some real pace” when they get to Dublin. Seeing a midfield with Marcus, Fin and Freeman would really make the Irish think twice.
I'd like to see Cadan Murley and Ollie Sleightholme start on the wings. Two pure try scorers. Furbank will return to age 15 when he recovers; If George Hendy is available, I'd like him to get the shirt in the meantime.
Moving Marcus to the side is a stop-gap solution that doesn't work long-term for England
Tommy Freeman (centre) and Smith (right) could form a deadly partnership as England centers
I don't think Freddie Steward is fast enough for 15 at the top end of the game. I'm not talking about a team that can get some results in the Six Nations, I'm talking about building a team that can win a World Cup.
To win a World Cup you need full gas and Freddie will not worry the bigger teams with his winger attack. He's another kid I'd like to see tested at age 12, like Alex Lozowski.
Borthwick has plenty of options there and now is the time to try them. But when it comes to moving Marcus to full-back, that just doesn't sit right with me.
