It was no surprise to see Matthew McConaughey on the Texas sideline in a leather jacket and cowboy hat during Friday's devastating 28-14 Cotton Bowl loss to Ohio State. The Austin resident, program donor and die-hard Longhorns fan is a staple at every Texas game, where he is frequently recorded by ESPN and Fox Sports cameras.
But as McConaughey's Longhorns saw their national title hopes dashed by the Buckeyes, who now advance to face Notre Dame in the national title game, fans seemed sour on the Hollywood star.
“We get it,” one fan wrote. 'He's a Texas fan. My God.
“Can someone let him know he's not on the team?” added another.
Others compared McConaughey to Texas mascot Bevo or the most famous Kansas City Chiefs fan.
“We talk about Matthew McConaughey a lot more than Taylor Swift during football broadcasts,” one fan commented.

The Austin resident, program donor and die-hard Longhorns fan is a staple at every Texas game, where he is frequently recorded by ESPN and Fox Sports cameras.
But not everyone was upset with McConaughey, who felt the need to issue a statement following the loss.
“What a fight tonight, @TexasLonghorns football men,” he wrote on It was a season to be proud of. See you forever.'
The responses to the post show the other side of the debate regarding McConaughey, who has formed a strong bond with the Longhorns faithful over the years.
“Thanks for being a good guy,” wrote one Texas fan.
“Spoken by a true Longhorn fan who understands life and football,” another added.
Even the Ohio State marching band couldn't help but show their appreciation for McConaughey on the sideline before the game.
In a social media clip, McConaughey is seen waving to band members as they walk by in single file.
“Just read your book,” said one band member, while fist bumping the Hollywood actor.
“Thanks, man,” McConaughey responded happily.
Each member of the band appeared to take a punch from the Lincoln Lawyer star.
McConaughey appeared to be attending the game with his Camila and children Levi, Vida and Livingston. However, it appeared that his family took a seat in the stands for the game as he continued to stroll down the sideline.
