Newcastle 3-1 Bromley: Magpies survive early scare as they come back to keep FA Cup dream alive against League Two minnows

For the second time in Newcastle United's history and after a red-hot winter of eight consecutive victories, a domestic treble will be alive from January.

Even then, on the previous occasion, in 1976, they were bouncing around in the bottom half of the old First Division and finished the season empty-handed.

Today, Eddie Howe's side are fifth in the Premier League and have a two-goal lead over Arsenal heading into the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final. They are also in the fourth round of the FA Cup for the second time in five years; Not that this step was as simple as the scoreboard might suggest.

Howe was unhappy with some of what he saw during the first half as League Two Bromley took the lead and could have had a second before Lewis Miley curled in a super equalizer from 25 yards. But there was nothing extraordinary about a performance that lacked energy and quality.

There was mitigation. Nine changes brought several due to the cold. But come half-time, Howe might well have been keen to make another nine. Instead, he made two (costing a total of £85 million) and within four minutes, one of them, Anthony Gordon, scored the penalty that gave the hosts a lead they did not want to relinquish. The English winger had shown more urgency in those four minutes than many in the previous 45.

Captain Bruno Guimaraes was the other one to arrive at half-time and, when William Osula made it 3-1 shortly after the hour, there was an argument to take the Brazilian and Gordon off again. They had shown how to control and influence a match in just a quarter of an hour on the pitch.

Miley was the only starter to emerge with any real credit, making his first start since February. The 18-year-old midfielder has grown physically during his period out due to injury and, as it shows that he did not shy away despite his team's initial problems, there has also been mental maturity.

“Lewis' shot was an incredible long-range shot, it's not really something you see regularly with him,” Howe said. But today he played very well. The onus was on him, like six of us, to initiate many of our attacks, and I thought he kept his composure, as he always does. He picked a lot of good passes. There will be an element of frustration in him because he will want to play more. But no harm will be done for how he performed today.

Osula's goal still eclipsed Miley's as the pick of the lot, cutting across the box from the right and hitting the top corner with her left for her first black and white goal. The Norwegian under-21 striker is a project player for Howe and his team and, through 69 minutes of some good and some bad, there is clearly work to be done. However, it is worth keeping.

“It was a great moment for Will,” Howe said. “Any striker wants to score when he arrives at a new club; he wants to score early just to calm himself down.” He's been waiting and waiting and needing that goal, really. It was spectacular when it arrived: what a goal from him. “We have seen him regularly in training, he is a good finisher.”

But also a few words for Bromley's first game. It came after eight minutes when Swansea loanee Cameron Congreve collected the ball 25 yards out and dodged the shot from Martin Dubravka, the goalkeeper who now appears set to stay at the club amid an offer from Saudi Arabia.

Danny Imray raced towards goal soon after and brushed the post, and a 2-0 lead would not have been undeserved for a team some 75 places below Newcastle in the football pyramid.

Miley then scored the equalizer in the 16th minute before second-half changes changed the course of the tie. It is a credit to Andy Woodman's Bromley that Howe felt the need to finish the game with five of his recent regulars on the field.

Former Newcastle goalkeeping coach Woodman said: “I really hope Newcastle can win some titles.” He's been a monkey on the club's back for so long. Nothing would give me greater pleasure.

It may seem unremarkable that the Magpies are still in both cup competitions until February. But when the last and only time they achieved it was almost 50 years ago, it shows what a barren period it has been.

No one is suffering on Tyneside at the moment and the bandwagon keeps moving forward, even if they had to endure a bumpy first half here.
