It was pretty bad in a week Yevgeny Malkinhe finally got some good news… his Stanley Cup rings were found.
Allegheny County police said Thursday that the championship jewelry that Malkin had believed was stolen in a burglary at his Pennsylvania home over the weekend was discovered.
Police said the wrestling trio “were at his residence” but did not elaborate further on the matter.
Malkin said in a statement he was grateful his prized possessions were safe.
“I would like to express my gratitude to the Allegheny County Police, Sewickley Heights Police and the entire Penguins organization,” the Pittsburgh Center said. “The outpouring of support and concern from my teammates and fans over the last few days means a lot to my family and me.”
Malkin's apartment was in Sewickley Heights searched on Jan. 11 — the same day the Penguins lost to the Ottawa Senators at PPG Paints Arena. Malkin did not play in tilt due to injury.
Malkin's home security system was down for some reason during the break-in – and now that his rings have been found, it's unclear exactly what was stolen. Police say they are still investigating the incident.
However, police said early indications suggest there is “no connection to any of the reported organizations targeting professional athletes across the country.”
Malkin has played just one game since the slump, recording an assist in Tuesday's loss to Seattle.
