lady Joan Plowrighta legendary British stage and screen actress, has died… according to her family.
The actress – best known for her work in the 1992 film “The Cursed April,” for which she received an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe – died peacefully on Thursday surrounded by her loved ones at Denville Hall… a retirement home for artists in North West London.
Although her family did not give a cause of death, they praised “her brilliant career” and thanked those “who helped care for her in her final years.”
She leaves behind her children, Richard, TamsinAnd Julie Kate … who she greeted with the famous British director/actor Laurence Olivier in their 28-year marriage.
Joan's career spanned six decades and she gave unforgettable performances on Broadway, the West End and the big screen. She won a Tony Award in 1961 for her work in the Broadway play “A Taste of Honey.”
Joan made history in 1993 when she became the second actress to win two Golden Globes in the same year… along with The Enchanted April, she picked up another win for her work in the HBO series Stalin. So far, only four actresses have won from this feat…including Helen Mirren, Sigourney WeaverAnd Kate Winslet.
Other notable films include “The Entertainer,” “The Scarlet Letter,” “101 Dalmatians,” “Tea with Mussolini,” “Dennis the Menace,” and countless other titles.
Joan was 95.
