A former Newcastle star missed his debut for his new club due to a car accident.

Paul Dummett, who was on the Magpies' books between 2000 and 2024 after coming through the club's academy, signed for League Two Carlisle this month with former teammate Mike Williamson.

It was hoped Dummett could bring experience and quality to a team struggling in League Two, with the Cumbrians bottom of the Football League and at risk of falling out of the top four divisions.

Williamson replaced Paul Simpson in September, leaving MK Dons, but has so far been unable to improve the team's fortunes much, and the January reinforcements are expected to benefit his team.

Dummett, who also has five caps for Wales, joined on a short-term contract and was expected to make his debut against Bradford this weekend.

However, it has been revealed that this did not happen because the defender was involved in a car accident on Friday.

Carlisle manager Mike Williamson said he expects his new signing to be fit next weekend.

A statement from Carlisle read: “Mike Williamson has confirmed that Paul Dummett missed today's match after being involved in a car accident yesterday.

“He has a couple of cuts and bruises, but no serious injuries. Paul will return to full training on Monday.

Williamson added: “It's okay.” “He spent the day having some tests, but he will be training on Monday and we hope he will be fit next weekend.”

On joining Carlisle, Dummett, who was born in Newcastle, said: “I always saw Carlisle as an option for me when I left Newcastle, in fact even before I went to Wigan.

'I felt Carlisle could be a good fit for me. Being from Newcastle meant being close to home and I know the quality of the pitch here too, having watched it over the years.”

Carlisle lost 1-0 on Saturday against Bradford, with Calum Kavanagh scoring the winning goal for the promotion-chasing Chickens.
