Borussia Dortmund has fired Nuri Sahin after just seven months in office.
The former Dortmund and Real Madrid midfielder was relieved of his duties following his team's 2-1 defeat to Bologna on Tuesday night, reports claim.
Sahin took his team into the match knowing that defeat could mean the end of his tenure, with the team reeling in the Bundesliga and without the points needed to automatically qualify for the Champions League last 16.
According to Sky Germany and Bild, Sahin was fired on Tuesday night, and the team and coaching staff were informed of the decision at Dortmund's team hotel in Bologna.
In a club statement, Dortmund sporting director Lars Ricken said: “We highly value Nuri Sahin and his work, we expected a long-term collaboration and until the end we hoped we could achieve sporting change together.”
'After four defeats in a row, due to only one victory in the last nine games and currently tenth in the Bundesliga standings, we have unfortunately lost faith in being able to achieve our sporting goals in the current constellation. “This decision hurts me personally, but it was inevitable after the Bologna game.”

The German giants suffered their fourth consecutive defeat on Tuesday night against Serie A side Bologna.
Erik ten Hag has been out of work since being sacked by Manchester United in October.
Shortly after the defeat in Italy, Sahin said he still felt the confidence of his players but accepted that his future at his boyhood club was uncertain.
'This is not about me. If I am the problem, if a change of coach would solve all the problems, so be it. We have to deliver and the fact is that we have already lost four games in a row,” Sahin said.
'Even a point would have been important on the way to a top eight finish. “It's not about me, but about the Borussia Dortmund club.”
The 36-year-old was also quoted in the club's statement announcing his dismissal: “Unfortunately, this season we have failed to live up to Borussia Dortmund's sporting ambitions. I wish this special club all the best.” .
Dortmund are yet to confirm who will lead the team in their next match against Werder Bremen, who sit one place above them in the table in ninth place.
One name likely to be linked to the role is former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, who was revealed last week to be working as a “shadow coach” under Sahin.
The 54-year-old has some coaching experience in Germany, which came for two years at Bayern Munich II, while Pep Guardiola managed the senior team.
Ten Hag was at the Westfalenstadion last week when Dortmund suffered a 3-2 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen. The result increased the pressure on Sahin, who replaced Edin Terzic at the start of the campaign.
Ten Hag reportedly has a “very good” relationship with Dortmund advisor and former captain Matthias Sammer.
