Arsenal approached the match looking to increase their chances of achieving an automatic qualification spot for the round of 16 of the competition.

Mikel Arteta's team had collected 13 points from their first six games in the renewed league phase of the competition.

The results left the Gunners in the top eight of the league, which would be enough to go directly to the next phase of the competition.

Victory over the Croatian champions would help Arsenal avoid falling into the play-off places.

Zagreb are out of the play-off positions at this stage, but could still secure a place with positive results in the remaining matches.
