Alan Shearer has given a scathing assessment of Manchester United's recent performances, comparing their performance against Newcastle to that of a “youth team” and warning fans they should be “really worried” ahead of Sunday's clash with Liverpool.
Man United, under new manager Ruben Amorim, are going through a torrid run, having lost their last four games in all competitions and conceding 11 goals along the way.
Their latest setback came in the 2-0 defeat to Newcastle on Monday night, where the Magpies scored two goals in the first 20 minutes. Although United managed to avoid further damage, the result has done little to calm growing concerns.
Shearer was particularly critical of United's performance at Old Trafford, calling it “really poor” and predicting a dismal result against Liverpool given there has been little time to improve.

“I know it's a great game and there have been great games over the years, but I can only see one winner in this game and it's Liverpool. If United are as poor as they were in the first half hour against Newcastle, so as a fan you would be really worried about this one.

“They would have to improve massively, with the amount of chances Liverpool create, you would really fear for Man United in this case.” “I don't see any other outcome than a Liverpool win and scoring some goals in the process.”
Amorim is aware that United face an uphill battle when it comes to facing Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, but insists his team want to put in a “better performance”.
Speaking before the match, he said: “We had more time to train, two days in a row, to train with the team.” I think that can help us, given the environment. Of course, it is a difficult time because we are losing too many games.
'This year we are going to face the best team but, as I said, we are training. We feel more about the team, we prepare the team more and we want to improve performance compared to the last game.
'In football, (in) a match, anything can happen. If we talk about the season, the best one almost always wins. At the moment they are better than us but we can win any game. We have to focus not on context but on performance.
'What we have to do are simple things and I think we have to improve the simple things to play these types of games. “We have the responsibility to play to win the game.”
