Alexis Mac Allister bemoaned Liverpool's poor performance in their 2-2 draw against Manchester United on Sunday night.
Arne Slot's side missed the chance to move eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table after Amad Diallo's 80th-minute goal concluded the scoring in a thrilling encounter.
United were much improved on their recent performances and took the lead after the break before the home side regained control.
But their inability to maintain their lead, as well as their slow start, were denounced by the Argentine midfielder, who was an exceptional player for the league leaders.
“It's not good enough,” he told Sky Sports after the match. “The performance was not as good as we wanted. We conceded too many chances. We had opportunities to score more goals.
'I think the effort was there, the mentality was there. When you are winning 2-1, 75 minutes you have to defend better.
Alexis Mac Allister was a standout player for the home team against Manchester United.
United recovered from their second-half setback to take a late point against the leaders.
Amad Diallo made another decisive contribution, scoring the late winner against Manchester City last month.
“We start games in which we are losing and then we react.”
Going into the match, the home team was expected to claim a resounding victory, given the recent form of both teams.
Mac Allister, who assisted on Liverpool's first goal, addressed the issue and insisted it was not something the team dwelled on.
“It doesn't bother me,” he added. “That's football, we just try to do our job.”
His compatriot Lisandro Martínez opened the scoring with a powerful shot into the roof of the Liverpool net in the 52nd minute. It was fair reward for Rubén Amorim's team, who impressed during the first half.
But all their hard work was undone 11 minutes into the second half when Cody Gakpo and then Mohamed Salah, from the spot, put the leaders ahead for the first time.
United, however, showed a spirit they had been lacking in recent weeks and found the equalizer thanks to a clinical finish from Diallo.
It could have been even more for the visitors, who squandered a golden opportunity to claim all three points in stoppage time when Harry Maguire's team fired over the bar from close range.
Despite the immediate disappointment, Liverpool remain six points ahead of title rivals Arsenal and a further four ahead of Chelsea following their respective draws on Saturday, with a game in hand.
United rise to 13th place, ahead of West Ham and just one point behind Tottenham.
