Manchester United winger Antony was eligible to miss the season for his side's Premier League clash against Southampton at Old Trafford.

With the Red Devils trailing 1-0 after a Manuel Ugarte own goal in the first half, United took the lead and Alejandro Garnacho hit the ball across the goal.

Antony reached the far post with the goal at his mercy, but the ball hit his shin and fell into the hands of Aaron Ramsdale.

The £82million striker lay on the ground in the six-yard box staring at the sky after squandering a golden chance to equalize for his team.

Meanwhile, TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher was left in disbelief at what he had just seen.

“I can't believe he missed it,” Fletcher exclaimed as Ramsdale gratefully clutched the ball to his chest.

Antony slipped but failed to score from just two yards against Southampton.

Co-commentator Ally McCoist was equally perplexed and questioned why Antony dropped to the ground instead of standing to hit the ball.

'Why are you going to hide, Fletch?' McCoist asked. 'The ball is perfect. Simply hit the ball into the net.

'That's absolutely incredible. That's a babysitter, man. Shocking ending but a good play.”

Antony came on at half-time to replace Kobbie Mainoo after a difficult first half for the home team.

André Onana was forced to make a series of saves but was unable to prevent a Southampton corner which deflected off Ugarte and into the net.

Antony's introduction was supposed to give life to United, but Rubén Amorim could only watch in horror as the Brazilian squandered one of the easiest opportunities he will have all season.
