Fans mocked David Raya for a “big mistake” against Brentford, but the Arsenal goalkeeper immediately made amends with a fantastic save on the goal line.
Arsenal were trailing 1-0 in the 28th minute when Keane Lewis-Potter tried his luck for Brentford.
It should have been a routine save for Raya but he let the ball slip through his fingers and it almost ended up in the net.
Somehow the Spaniard managed an acrobatic back dive and clawed the ball out of the air over the goal line, and within a minute Gabriel Jesus had scored at the other end to cancel out Bryan Mbeumo's opener.
Raya made amends for the mistake and put the Gunners on track for their goal, but users on social media had a critical response.
'Why are you shaky today? Is it because he plays against his former team? wrote a user on X.
Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya has been mocked for the mistake that led to him having to make this save against Brentford.
Raya made a remarkable goal-line clearance, but only after letting a routine Keane Lewis-Potter save slip through his fingers.
“Raya clears the ball off the line after his big mistake,” said another.
“The 'goal line kick' makes him look like a hero,” commented another.
'Goal-line clearance due to his own initial error. “I wouldn't make a big deal out of this lmao,” said another.
One said: “This guy has no competition, that's why,” while another added: “I miss (Aaron) Ramsdale.”
In the second half, Mikel Merino and Gabriel Martinelli scored within three minutes to give Arsenal a 3-1 lead.
At the time of this publication, Arsenal have the best defensive record in the Premier League, having conceded 17 goals alongside Liverpool.
Only Chelsea's Robert Sanchez has a better save percentage in the league than Raya.
Earlier this season, he was widely praised for a sensational double save against Atalanta in the Champions League.
He first saved a Mario Retegui penalty in the corner and then, moments later, crawled to the middle of the goal to deny the follow-up header.
“I have to say it's one of the best saves I've ever seen, the second one,” said TNT Sports co-commentator Steve McManaman.
'That's amazing! How do you get up so fast? Wow! One of the best saves I've ever seen!'
