Kai Havertz's wife was subjected to sickening abuse on Instagram after Arsenal were knocked out of the FA Cup at the hands of Manchester United.
Havertz was at the center of the drama during a gripping outing at the Emirates, fouling Harry Maguire to win a penalty with the scores level, only for club captain Martin Odegaard to see his effort saved.
However, it was the final action that proved most crucial, missing the crucial penalty in the shootout that sent Arsenal out of the competition.
In the wake of the loss, Havertz's wife, Sophia Weber, shared some abhorrent messages she received from her fans, some of them directed at her pregnancy.
One fan wrote: “I'm going to come to your house and kill your baby. I'm not even joking, just wait.” Another said: “I hope you have a miscarriage.”
Posting the direct messages about her story, she said: “I'm not sure what to say but please be more respectful.” We are better than this…
Kai Havertz's wife Sophia Weber was subjected to sickening abuse on Instagram after Arsenal were knocked out of the FA Cup at the hands of Manchester United.
Sophia took to Instagram to share some of the abusive messages she received following the loss.
Havertz missed the crucial penalty in the shootout, having won a penalty earlier in the match.
“For someone to think it's okay to write something like this is so shocking to me… I hope you're just as ashamed of yourself.”
Havertz broke the news that he and Sophia were expecting their first child in November last year, sharing photos of them hugging while Sophia showed off her growing baby bump for the first time.
This came four months after the couple tied the knot and received an outpouring of well wishes from friends including fellow footballers Ben White, Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard and Julian Brandt.
Havertz dedicated his goal against Crystal Palace to his pregnant wife, and celebrated by stuffing the ball under his shirt and sucking his thumb.
But after her penalty spot misfortune against United, some fans have used Sophia's pregnancy to direct hate towards the couple.
The result deals a blow to Arsenal's hopes of winning titles this season, increasing the pressure on Mikel Arteta's team to turn around their Carabao Cup semi-final, in which they entered with a 2-2 deficit. 0 in the second leg against Newcastle.
Meanwhile, Manchester United will relish the win and look to continue their FA Cup defense against Leicester City in the fourth round.
