A new revelation has emerged in the Jones vs Djokovic saga
Tony Jones' strange outburst towards Novak Djokovic has been the talk of the tennis arena this week.
His comments, claiming the world No 7 was a “former” during a live TV broadcast, have sparked the ire of many around the world, from Piers Morgan to even Elon Musk. Nick Kyrgios even slammed the Channel 9 broadcaster on Monday in a hilarious sketch that was posted to his Instagram account.
Jones was seen standing on Channel 9's broadcast balcony talking to a camera when a group of Serbian fans appeared behind him. The group appeared to begin singing before the 63-year-old turned to the fans and sang: “Novak, he's overrated… Novak is a former.” Novak, kick him out.
Serbian fans were unable to hear his comments, and Djokovic demanded an apology from Jones following the comments, which he said were “insulting and offensive.”
Jones' apology has also been criticized, with some calling it “hollow” and appearing to be more of a defense of his words than an apology, but a new revelation about the saga has emerged.
Australian tennis great Paul McNamee and Serbian Council of Australia co-founder Dr Nina Markovic Khaze have claimed Channel Nine asked the crowd behind Jones to stay put.
Djokovic is home!
It's been a crazy week for the world number 7, who accepted Jones' apology yesterday afternoon.
In a statement issued by Tennis Australia, Djokovic stated that he was now looking to put the incident from earlier in the week behind him and focus on playing tennis.
Novak acknowledges that the apology has been given publicly as requested and is now moving on and focusing on his next match.
Good afternoon!
It's another sunny and warm day here at Melbourne Park and the atmosphere is improving with two big games ahead this afternoon.
Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka will look to book her place in the Australian Open semi-finals later tonight, but faces a tough test with world number 32 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who comes into this clash having beaten world number 19 of the world, Donna Vekic, in the fourth round. .
Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic continues his Australian Open campaign tonight. The 24-time Grand Slam champion is set to win his 11th Australian Open title, but tonight he will face his toughest challenge of the tournament yet: the Serbian will face Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals.
It has also been a big week for the Spaniard, as Alcaraz lost just one set on his way to a place in the last eight.
Djokovic, however, has been the talk of the tennis arena this week, as the Serbian became embroiled in a dispute with Channel 9 broadcaster Tony Jones.
On Sunday night, Djokovic said he would no longer give on-court interviews until he received a public apology from Jones, who had claimed during a television broadcast that the Serb was a “passover.”
Questions had been raised over whether Djokovic would be penalized for missing media engagements after he gave only a brief on-court interview following his victory against Jiri Lehecka.
And Tennis Australia has issued its ruling on the matter, which you can read below…
