Australian tennis star Destanee Aiava has responded to several fans on social media who embarrassingly seemed to embarrass her.
The 24-year-old took to X to mention a comment that claimed she “needed to lose some weight to get on her feet faster.” The comment has since been deleted.
Aiava responded to the post saying, “Good job triggering my ED (eating disorder).”
The Victorian tennis star, currently ranked 195 on the WTA Tour, today secured victory in her second round qualification match against Hungarian star Panna Udvardy, sealing the 6-4 6-1 victory.
The nasty comments came after journalist Ben Rothenberg shared an image showing Aiava wearing a pink Nike dress that matched the one Maria Sharapova wore at the 2012 US Open during her first day of qualifying.
Rothenberg noted the moment writing, “Funny archive fashion moment: Destanee Aiava wears the same pink Nike dress design for her 2025 Australian Open Qualifiers match that Maria Sharapova wore at the 2012 US Open.”
Destanee Aiava called out fans who shamefully shamed her on social media on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old Australian superstar responded to the comments but received a surprise response.
Aiava responded to a comment that embarrassed her, writing, “Good job triggering my erectile dysfunction.”
Aiava, who made her Grand Slam main draw debut at the 2017 Australian Open, first criticized the comment, before an unexpected moment occurred.
“'No hate' or 'body shaming' and then you hated and body shamed,” Aiava wrote after the post.
But there would be a twist in the saga: Aiava would receive an apology from user X.
'Hello Destanee,' the user began.
'I was only rooting for you and have been following your matches for the last 2 or 3 years! It was simply out of concern and nothing more!
'I'm so sorry if I hurt you, I love your game and you as a person!'
The X user added two “love heart” emojis, and the 24-year-old tennis star accepted the apology.
She wrote: “Thank you for your apology,” adding a “hug” emoji and a heart emoji.
Aiava added another message responding to the comment, before user X apologized.
The individual wrote that he was very sorry if his comments hurt. Aiava, who later thanked the person for their apology.
It came after Ben Rothenberg posted several images online showing Aiava had worn a dress similar in style to the one Maria Sharapova wore at the 2012 US Open.
Unfortunately, someone else posted a horrible comment on the post, and Aiava attacked user X again.
Unfortunately, other X users took to the platform to send the Australian star some horrible messages.
Aiava, however, called out another fan and took a screenshot of the individual's profile and his comment.
In response to Rothenberg's post, the X user wrote: 'OMG, why would she wear a dress that doesn't fit her at all?' She made a mess of the outfit with her inappropriate body, her bulges covering the design of the dress, OMG.
But Aiava responded: “Mathematics is not mathematics, stand firm and don't be a hypocrite.”
Aiava has enjoyed a fast start to this year's Australian Open qualifying, also beating tenth seed Anna Bogdan 6-4 6-2 at the 1573 Arena.
Earlier this week, Aiava sparked some controversy after he appeared to attack the culture surrounding Australia's United Cup team culture.
She revealed that there had been some aggressive and selfish behavior on the part of her teammates that had made her feel uncomfortable at camp.
In a YouTube video titled “My Honest Experience,” he gave an in-depth review of the week, stating that it was “strange and hostile.”
Earlier this week, Aiava spoke about the atmosphere in Australia's Untied Cup team, claiming it had been “unwelcoming”.
On Wednesday, Aiava secured a place in the third round of the Australian Open after beating Hungarian Panna Udvardy (pictured).
Although she admitted she had a “good time at the event,” the 24-year-old said the team felt “unwelcoming.”
“I understand we're in a competitive environment, but I thought being on a team, playing a team event, would be a little different,” Aiava said.
He did not take part in any live matches, and Australia failed to reach the knockout stages after missing out on first place in their group to Great Britain.
Aiava returns to Melbourne Park on Thursday to face Eva Lys in the third round of the women's singles heats on Court 3.
