The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly, says she wants the Canadians to play a role in maintaining peace in Ukraine after the Russian war ends.
The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has pledged to have conversations with Russian officials about how to end the war, who began with the invasion of Moscow in 2014 and became a large -scale war almost three years ago.
Joly says that Canada continues to ask the United States to include Ukraine in those conversations, after Washington suggested that Ukraine will lose territory and cannot be part of the NATO military alliance.
Joly is finishing visits to France, Germany and Belgium that, according to her, have focused on defending Canadian works and propping up the defense of Canada, since the United States threatens the allies with tariffs and put an end to military cooperation.
She says that while Europeans are receptive to the idea of the closest ties with Canada, many do not know the extent to which the Trump administration defies the economy of Canada.
Joly addresses South Africa for a meeting of foreign ministers of the G20, where he will try to determine how Canada's position presiding over the G7 could reflect the priorities of the largest G20 group.

Joly says that the conflict in Ukraine cannot end in terms that allow Russia to destabilize Europe, and Canada wants to help guarantee lasting peace after Washington sent mixed messages about whether US troops could help enforce an agreement of peace.
“We want to be part of these conversations regarding security guarantees,” Joly said at a virtual press conference from Brussels this morning.
“We want to be part of conversations related to the most Canadian participating in the protection of Ukraine.”
