Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca suggests he could drop Robert Sanchez after goalkeeper's horror show against Manchester City

Enzo Maresca has raised the prospect of dropping Robert Sanchez after the Chelsea goalkeeper suffered another high-profile error in the defeat at Manchester City.

Sanchez erratically rushed in to gift Haaland City's second of a 3-1 win, a result that takes the defending champions to fourth place in the Premier League.

The Spain international has now made five goal-contributing errors so far this season and Maresca has already taken him out of the shooting line.

Filip Jorgensen took up the gloves for wins over Southampton and Ipswich and could be in line to start when Chelsea host West Ham a week on Monday (tomorrow).

“We trust Robert for sure, but at the same time he is aware that he is making mistakes,” Maresca said.

“We continue to trust Robert, but we have a whole week, we see the reaction and decide for the next games.”

Maresca previously admitted that Sánchez is “still far, far from where I want him to be” and that the 27-year-old's long-term future appears under threat.

“Robert sure is fully aware that he has to do better,” the Chelsea boss added.

'He knows perfectly well. At this moment it is like that. He is the first to know that he has to do better.

Sanchez's Gaffe overshadowed a difficult debut for City's new £33m centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov, whose hapless header gave Noni Madueke an early opener.

The 20-year-old Uzbekistan international nervously gave away possession and was brought in for tripping over Cole Palmer, with the City players protecting the youngster until he was substituted in the second half.

Pep Guardiola did not speak to Khusanov after the game due to his language barrier, but praised his teammates' response after the second-minute error on debut. Bernardo Silva rushed to him immediately after the goal.

“He knows he made a mistake,” Guardiola said. 'It will take a lesson. He's so young. It's not easy against these incredible Chelsea players.

'I loved the reaction of his teammates. You will learn. I replaced the yellow card I had, not the mistake.

We return emotionally. Maybe we weren't exceptional, we got a little lost with High Line, we didn't find players behind (enough), but the situation we are in, a 3-1 victory against Chelsea and against a friend I admire, is really important.

Another debutant, £59m forward Omar Marmoush of Eintracht Frankfurt, was impressive and received praise from Haaland.

“I've seen it in the Bundesliga and I saw it,” Haaland said. 'It's going to be fantastic to play with him. You can see there's something special about it. I'm looking forward to playing with him and he's going to be really good.
