Chelsea has confirmed the signing of the American defense Naomi girma for a world record rate.

The 24 -year -old was presented in the countryside by the Women's Super League champions before Sunday's game against Arsenal in Stamford Bridge.

It arrives from San Diego Wave for about 900,000 pounds sterling, eclipsing the current record (paid by the Bay FC in February 2024 by Racheal Kundanji) in 215,000 pounds sterling.

With 1.1 million dollars, this makes Girma the first transfer of one million dollars in women's football after the blues defended themselves from the French Lyon competition.

She told the Chelsea website: “I am very happy and very excited to be here. It doesn't seem real.”

“There are many things about Chelsea that made me want to come here: culture, winning mentality, staff and players. It is an excellent environment to learn and grow.”

Girma becomes the first signing of Sonia Bompastor in the January signing window and is incorporated after the Kadeisha Buchanan defense was discarded, probably for the rest of the season, due to an anterior cross ligament injury.

The rate is almost triple the previous British record established when Chelsea signed Mayra Ramírez from the Levant for £ 384,000 a year ago.

Chelsea Women's Soccer director Paul Green said: “Naomi is a world -class defender who is now entering the best years of his career.

“Naomi has demonstrated his NWSL talent winning several individual awards and has demonstrated his talent on the international stage for the USA. UU., Included this summer by winning a gold medal at the Olympic Games.

“It is certainly ready for the next step in your career and we are delighted that it is with Chelsea.”

Girma, who caught international attention for the first time during the 2023 World Cup, in which the United States was eliminated in the round of 16, played every minute of the victorious Olympic campaign of his country in Paris and was named the player of the year of US soccer.
