Owner of the Chicago Cubs Thomas Ricketts is used to getting a lot of heat from fans about his baseball team… but now he's even drawing the ire of LITTLE KIDS – because a six-year-old kid called him “cheap” to his face!
TMZ Sports The hilarious clip was shot last weekend at the team's annual fan summit called the Cubs Convention. In the clip, Ricketts, owner and team chairman, was making his rounds, signing autographs and chatting with fans… when he encountered the angry boy.
We're told the boy was supposed to ask Ricketts to autograph a bat labeled “The Cheapest Owner in Baseball”…even though TR obviously wasn't playing.
After making sure he heard correctly, the 61-year-old owner asked who his father was, knowing the child had probably been asked to do so by his father. Unfortunately, the video cuts out before we see how the interaction ended.
The young fan is not the only one with his criticism of the Cubs boncho. Fans were recently upset when he said they couldn't spend money like their New York or LA counterparts.
“They think, somehow we have all these dollars that the Dodgers have, the Mets have or the Yankees have, and we just keep them,” he said. “Which is not true at all. What happens is that every year we try to break even and that’s it.”
Despite the owner's claim, many don't believe the explanation… especially considering the team is worth around $4.225 BILLION. Ricketts also reportedly has a personal net worth of around $2.3 billion.
We'll see if the call inspires the Cubs to spend even more money – but with most big-name free agents already off the roster, fans may have to wait until next season!
