Beloved football commentator Chris Kamara has given an update on his speech battle with apraxia and revealed that singing is helping him rediscover his iconic voice.

Kamara has endured a tortuous journey with apraxia, a rare neurological condition that affects the ability to speak, which has led him to step away from several broadcast roles.

The 67-year-old was one of the sport's funniest and most beloved personalities during his 20 years in front of the cameras and, most notably, on Sky Sports News, where he shared a memorable relationship with Jeff Stelling.

But in 2022, Kamara was heartbreakingly forced to leave his profession after receiving a diagnosis of apraxia of speech, a rare neurological disorder that caused him to slur his words.

Apraxia is a poorly understood condition that affects the body's ability to perform natural motor functions and Kamara has undergone intense speech therapy in a bid to get back on screen.

Kamara made an emotional return to football on Boxing Day as a guest presenter on Amazon Sport's coverage of Nottingham Forest's clash against Spurs and has now provided a further update on his condition.

As well as speech therapy, Kamara has also been working on his singing voice and has joined a Bradford City supporters' choir for the new BBC series, Bantam of the Opera.

Appearing on the BBC Breakfast Show on Monday morning, Kamara hilariously revealed how joining the choir “hasn't made any difference” to improving his singing, but is helping him in everyday life.

“Well, the good news is that I've never been able to sing before, so it hasn't made any difference,” Kamara joked.

'But the truth of the matter is that you get more fluidity in your voice when you sing, so it's a form of rehabilitation when you're trying to get your voice back. “Singing helps me,” he added.
