College basketball icon Mike Babul dies at 47 after suffering heart attack


The world of college basketball is in mourning following the shocking death of Mike Babul from a heart attack at the age of 47.

Babul is a Massachusetts basketball legend after his time as a player and later became a coach for the Brooklyn Nets organization.

At the time of his death on Monday, he was head coach of Thayer Academy and had also recently taken over the South Shore Monarchs in the Basketball League.

Tributes immediately poured in on social media, with UMass men's basketball posting: “Babel was a true Massachusetts basketball legend on the court, serving as a positive force in his community and in many ways as a coach.”

Local journalist Kevin McNamara added: “Just horrible news about the sudden passing of Mike Babul of Attleboro.”

'A legendary local basketball player and UMass star, but I knew Mike as a sweet person who loved to coach and play. And he loved fun. What a loss at only 47 years old!

The Sun Chronicle first reported Babul's cause of death and shared the news of a heart attack on Monday.
