England assured a pulsating victory of 26-25 over France and began its campaign of the six nations after the last attempt by Elliot Daly in Allianz Stadium.
Daly ran to meet a delayed ball end of Smith end before sliding between defenders and the advance in the last seconds of the confrontation.
Smith then hit the extras in their first test start to seal the return.
The game was developed in a rain launch and was drilled by a series of management errors that are not very characteristic of visitors, but Louis Bielle-Barrey seemed to have broken the hearts of England after scoring with five minutes to play.
However, there was still time for the drama in death and the hosts gathered the restart after Smith's conversion before hacking in the stands to confirm his victory.
