Fans ask for a 'perfect' group to perform the national anthem at the Super Bowl: 'It brought tears to my eyes'

Pentatonix wowed NFL fans with their rendition of the Star Spangled Banner on Christmas Day.

The acapella group had the honor of performing the national anthem before the Houston Texans' holiday matchup against the Baltimore Ravens on December 25, which also saw Beyoncé deliver an amazing halftime show.

The five-part harmony impressed many inside NRG Stadium as the camera focused on NFL stars such as CJ Stroud and Lamar Jackson.

And almost a week later, NFL fans are still talking online about the “beautiful and inspiring” performance.

Many fans took to social media to praise the vocalists and left rave reviews about the performance.

'Holy shit! That brought tears to my eyes. Incredible!! Perfect, literally perfect,” said one fan on X, formerly known as Twitter.

'Wow! Goosebumps! Incredible performance by @PTXofficial and God bless America,” echoed another excited social media user.

“Absolutely amazing version of the national anthem,” wrote a third, while another added: “They killed this!”

'Wow…phenomenal national anthem,' one fan posted among the enthusiastic responses, while another chimed in and said: 'Beautiful and inspiring!' Tears in my eyes!!'

Whitney Houston's performance at the 1991 Super Bowl has long been hailed as one of the best performances of the Star Spangled Banner.

However, some NFL fans felt that Pentatonix's version was one of the best since Houston's iconic performance, and could even rival the pop legend's.

'I thought it was great! I also think Pentatonix's National Anthem was the best since Whitney did it decades ago,' one user shared, also referring to Beyoncé's halftime show.

“Probably one of the best renditions of the national anthem I've heard in a long time, if not the best,” another raved about Pentatonix.

Best thing since Whitney Houston sang the National Anthem,” a third agreed. 'I can finally back up a performance! As a veteran and an American who feels very uncomfortable right now, I am very proud! Bravo.'

Meanwhile, Pentatonix left some NFL fans so impressed that they asked the group to repeat their performance, on the NFL's biggest stage.

Bring them back for the Super Bowl anthem! Perfect,” urged one fan, while another account seemed to agree with requesting that the quintet “play all the national anthems.”

Pentatonix, currently consisting of vocalists Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Matt Sallee and Kevin Olusola, hails from nearby Arlington, Texas. Sallee replaced former member Avi Kaplan as the group's point guard in 2017.

The group formed in 2011 and subsequently won the third season of NBC's The Sing-Off, and went on to win three Grammy Awards. They were even honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last year.

They are traditionally known for their pop-style arrangements featuring vocal harmonies and covers or medleys of well-known hits, but previously performed the national anthem prior to the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship.
