Former Central Michigan Chippewas quarterback Tommy Lazarus has died, the school announced Thursday. He was just 27 years old.
According to multiple reports, Lazzaro, a native of Monument, Colorado, was involved in a fatal hunting accident in Florida last Sunday.
Lazzaro made 20 career appearances for the Chippewas…and was part of the team that went 8-6 and went 8-6 to the MAC Championship Game against Miami (OH) in 2019. He led the team with two touchdowns in the contest.
In his career at CMU, Lazzaro rushed for 758 yards and five touchdowns through the air, along with 542 yards and 11 scores on the ground.
During his senior year, his teammates honored him with the Kurt Dobronski Award, which honors a player who demonstrates commitment, intensity and appreciation for the program.
After graduating with a degree in entrepreneurship, he joined the army and achieved the rank of sergeant. His father and grandfather also served the country.
Lazzaro's former coach, Jim McElwainexpressed his condolences … and said, “When we took over the program, Tommy was really our leader in many ways.”
“CMU Football was blessed to have him and will always remember him for all he did for many of us. He will be missed by all Chippewas.”
