Former LIV golfer slams Saudi-backed league saying tour 'all about money' as he waits for chance to join PGA

A former LIV Golf competitor has criticized the golf circuit for what he believed were unfulfilled promises and potential after three years with the Saudi-backed rebel league.

Eugenio Chacarra, a 24-year-old Spanish golfer, had been persuaded to join the circuit which is supported by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

Signed a three-year deal to move to LIV, instead of going to the Korn Ferry Tour, after being the world's No. 2 amateur in 2022.

But now, it seems that some buyers regret being removed from Sergio García's team, Fireballs GC.

“When I joined LIV, they promised me OWGR and specialties,” Chacarra told Tom Hobbs, who goes by Flushing It on X.

'But that didn't happen. I trusted them. I was the first young man, then the others came after I made the decision. But OWGR and the majors haven't happened yet.

—I saw you last year when they withdrew the offer. It's frustrating, but I'm excited for the new opportunity and to see where my game takes me.

'I see what it's like to win on the PGA Tour and how it changes your life. How the main access and classification points are obtained. In LIV nothing changes, there is only money.

'It doesn't matter if you finish thirtieth or first, just the money. I'm not a guy who wants more money. What will change my life is playing in Hawaii and qualifying for the Majors, qualifying for the Masters, the Ryder Cup.'

On the LIV Tour, Chacarra notched a victory in October 2022 at LIV Golf Bangkok, but had not won an event since.

That led to him being dropped and not signed. Spanish amateur golfer Luis Masaveu took his place, joining García alongside compatriot David Puig and Mexican Abraham Ancer.

Chacarra now hopes to make the jump to the PGA Tour. However, he has to wait to get that chance, as the PGA Tour still has a one-year ban on any golfer competing in LIV events.

The young Spaniard compared himself to another young European golfer: the Swede Ludvig Aberg.

“I'm a winner and they never treated me like one,” Chacarra said. 'On the PGA Tour, Ludvig Aberg has a win and I have a win on LIV.

Chacarra won a LIV Golf event in Thailand in 2022, but had not won since. He is still the only young man who has won on the circuit, but was eliminated from the general classification by Sergio García's Fireballs.

“He has a victory on the European Tour and I have a victory on the Asian Tour International Series. We have similar careers, but he has much more experience and plays bigger tournaments, but we have the same victories.

'We have acted in a similar way. What tours I can play on, I have won them. Same with him. But he is the number 6 player in the world and everyone talks about him.

“But at LIV I'm the only young guy who won and they never talk about me. They always talk about the same guys. I don't blame them, they probably know more, but they don't really care much about young people.

'So this decision is the best for me. I am very grateful for what they have done, but my mind is different now and I want to achieve what I dreamed of when I was little. Because obviously LIV didn't exist when I was a kid. “I've been watching Tiger Woods win on the PGA Tour and I want to do it.”

Chacarra told Flushing It that he plans to compete in the India International Series later this month and hopes to get some sponsorship invites to compete in the DP World Tour.
