Wilfred Zaha is in talks for a shock move to MLS's Charlotte FC this month.
The former Crystal Palace winger is completing an initial loan deal with the potential for another season.
The 32-year-old has been on loan at Lyon from Galatasaray, but with his playing time in France limited, he has been exploring options to find a new club.
Having played for Galatasaray and Lyon in the same season, regulations ensure that he will not be able to play for another team in Europe this season.
That opened the door for ambitious Charlotte, who is now hoping to reach a deal.
Zaha, who was back in the stands at Selhurst Park for Palace's game against Arsenal in December, has not ruled out a return to the Premier League at some point but is ready to seize the opportunity for a new challenge in America.
Wilfred Zaha has struggled to get playing time while on loan at Lyon from Turkish side Galatasaray.
The ambitious MLS team is currently managed by former Brentford and Aston Villa manager Dean Smith.
The club is looking to compete with the division's big spenders, including Lionel Messi's Inter Miami.
Zaha made his Palace first-team debut aged just 17 in March 2010 and joined United as Sir Alex Ferguson's latest signing in January 2013.
However, under Ferguson's replacement David Moyes, Zaha played just four times.
He returned to Palace the following summer, first on a season-long loan and then permanently in January 2015, and stayed for a further eight and a half years.
He accumulated 90 goals and 52 assists in 458 games with the south London team.
His signing will be seen as an exciting coup for Charlotte, who had been in negotiations with Newcastle United for Miguel Almirón.
