  • Wales is looking to name three new key employees to start a revival
  • A former Welsh Welsh assistant and caregiver trainer is in the race
  • The Wesses were sentenced to a six -nations wooden spoon once again

Scott Johnson has become a main contender to fill the new rugby director of the Welsh Rugby Union, since the governing body draws a path to follow from the six nations.

Wales was beaten 68-14 by bitter rivals England in Cardiff last Saturday, a result that condemned them to a championship wooden spoon for the second consecutive year.

Now there are 17 tests without a victory for Wales. His last international success was against Georgia in the 2023 World Cup.

England's beating has brought a seismic change in the Galesgo game to calls, with former Sam Warburton and Alun Wyn Jones especially vocal.

The WRU hierarchy is under extreme pressure, but is in the midst of looking for three new key employees who hopes a revival will begin.

Abi Tierney, the WRU executive director, leads the search for a new permanent male coach to succeed Warren Gatland, as well as a rugby director.

Outside the countryside, Tierney is also close to appointing a new growth director who will be accused of improving the WRU commercial income.

MAILSPORT understands that Johnson, 62, is running for Rugby Labor Director, although a firm decision has not yet been made.

The Australian fulfilled the same role with his homeland and Scotland, so he has done the previous international experience.

He also has prior knowledge of the Welsh system that has worked as an assistant and coach of caregivers with Wales in the 2000s. In addition, he was previously used by the Ospreys Welsh region.

Johnson's most recent work after leaving Australia has been with Canada.

Matt Sherratt took care of the last three games of the six Nations of 2025 of Wales as an interim coach after Gatland's departure, but suffered defeats for Ireland and Scotland before the coup coup. Who takes over Gatland permanently is clearly a great decision.

But, it could be said that Rugby position director is more important since they will direct all Welsh rugby tracks systems that have been neglected for too long.

MAILSPORT understands that the WRU has also interviewed a series of names based in Welsh or Welsh for Rugby director. Huw Bevan, the current interim performance director of the WRU, has a strong consideration, but it is Johnson's past experience with international teams that works in his favor.

The WRU hopes to make a public announcement about its director of Rugby at the end of March and then advance with a training appointment, ideally in time for Japan's summer tour. That is because whoever happens to Gatland will be reported to the director of Rugby.

Franco Smith, Michael Cheika, Simon Easterby and Pat Lam have been mentioned as future Future coaches of Wales.

But Mailsport understands that Smith is online to succeed Gregor Towsend as a chief coach of Scotland since 2026, so it is likely to stay with Glasgow for now.
