But a failure to kill them left the door open and a disappointing second half saw the Towsend team exploit the possibility of a fifth consecutive historical victory over its rival fierce.
Finn Russell lost a vital conversion that would have won him right in death, with the defeat that ended with Scotland's chances of challenging the cutlery.
Meanwhile, Wales improved a lot in his game against Ireland in Cardiff, despite losing 27-18, and pushed the Grand Slam-Chasers until the end.
Having dispensed with Warren Gatland before in the championship, they could now be uncomfortable opponents in Murrayfield when the six nations resume after a two -week break on March 8.

“Wales will have the tail, they played well against Ireland,” Towsend said.
'They also moved the ball a lot, so it will be a real test for our defense.
'They won many Scrum penalties against a very good Irish pack. That is more or less everything I can analyze from what I was seeing on the phone on the team bus along the way.
'But they will be full of positivity and feeling that they may have nothing to lose in their last two games, so that is a dangerous opponent.
We are back at home. We ask players to show who we are as a team against England, both in attack and defense, but also to show what it means to play for Scotland in terms of the required effort.

He also refused to attribute any guilt to Russell, who lost three conversions and left six points in what was a low general performance of half of the Scotland fly.
“Last year I think he was in 95 percent and has been an excellent goal goal,” Towsend said. 'It takes more than just the ability to kick. You need a lot of mental approach and block things.
