Jim Harbaugh to undergo critical medical procedures after season ends in loss


After being eliminated from the playoffs, Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh will undergo some medical procedures to address his health.

By ESPN's Kris RhimHarbaugh will undergo cardiac ablation and hip replacement surgery.

A cardiac ablation is a minimally invasive procedure aimed at stopping or preventing cardiac arrhythmias, or irregular heartbeats.

Earlier this season, Harbaugh had to leave his team's Week 6 game against the Denver Broncos due to atrial flutter, or an abnormality in the heartbeat.

Harbaugh was treated in the locker room by paramedics and then returned to the sideline to coach the rest of the game.

He went to a cardiologist in October, was put on medication and then put on a heart monitor for two weeks.

Harbaugh had previously experienced episodes of arrhythmia and underwent a heart procedure in 2012, when he was the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.

As for hip replacement, Harbaugh has been patrolling the bench with a noticeable limp recently, which he hopes to fix through surgery.

Harbaugh just wrapped up his first NFL season since 2015, when he left the 49ers for his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

After a scandalous season that ended with Michigan winning the 2023 national championship, Harbaugh left for the Chargers in the winter of 2024.

In his first season back in professional football, Harbaugh led a Chargers team that went 5-12 the previous season to an 11-6 record and an AFC wild card berth.

The Chargers fell to the Houston Texans 32-12 on the road on a day in which Los Angeles quarterback Justin Herbert threw four interceptions.
