Josh Gad had to put on a show for a comedy legend… and revealed he was running Mel Brooks through the recent “Star Wars” sequels and at the same time accuses a “Spaceballs” sequel.
The actor told the story in a recent episode of “Let’s talk off camera” Podcast hosted by Kelly Ripa …explains that Mel is very involved in a sequel to Spaceballs.
Gad says that when they pitched their original concept, Mel told them they needed to explain the newer films to him… and asked Gad not to get into details.
JG says he then launched into a 40-minute explanation… comparing himself to a combat veteran going to war in front of a person – sweating profusely, nailing every line and beat, and explaining every comedic set piece .
Gad says that when he finished, Mel told him it “really sounds like you've got your finger on the pulse!”… a compliment that Josh says is the greatest thing he's ever received.
Earlier this year, it was announced that Gad had produced, written, and starred in the Spaceballs sequel… and Gad confirmed in November that they had already completed a first draft of the script.
In case you don't know… the original Spaceballs came out in 1987 and parodied the Star Wars universe. It played the main role Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, John Candy, Rick Moranis and Brooks himself. .
