Woyo Coulibaly has become Leicester's first signing of the January window after arriving from Italian club Parma in a £3million deal.
Boss Ruud van Nistelrooy was desperate to offer specialist competition at right-back for James Justin, who has struggled at times this season.
Coulibaly, 25, helped Parma win promotion to the Italian top flight last season and has made 14 appearances as they fight to maintain their place in Serie A this season.
Van Nistelrooy hopes the signing of Coulibaly, who was due to attend Wednesday's clash against Crystal Palace at the King Power Stadium, will kick off a period of transfer activity for Leicester that will help them avoid relegation.
They do not rule out trying to sign a goalkeeper during the current transfer market, since Mads Hermansen is still out due to injury.
The Dane has not played since being taken off during the Foxes' 4-0 defeat at Newcastle and Mail Sport revealed he had visited a specialist to try to understand the nature of the injury.
