Los Angeles Rams general manager Les Snead has hinted at the possibility of trading quarterback Matthew Stafford.
Stafford led Sean McVay's team to the divisional round of the playoffs, where they were defeated by the Philadelphia Eagles in a tense snow game.
On Friday, however, Snead was asked about the quarterback's future in Los Angeles. Rather than rule out the possibility of Stafford leaving during the offseason, Snead suggested the 36-year-old could go elsewhere.
Stafford, who is considering retirement, has two seasons left on his contract, which will net him about $103 million. He is due a $4 million bonus in mid-March, meaning the quarterback would need to be traded quickly.
“You don't want those issues to carry over into the offseason and become an issue heading into the season,” Snead said.
“As far as trades go, that's one thing, it's going to take someone calling or us reaching out; those are things that will be determined in the future.”
Los Angeles Rams have teased the possibility of trading quarterback Matthew Stafford
The former first overall pick led Sean McVay's team to the divisional round of the playoffs.
Los Angeles and Stafford faced a similar scenario last offseason. They finally agreed to a tight contract the day the Rams players reported to training camp.
“We don't want that to happen again,” McVay said. “I don't think that's good for anyone. I think sooner rather than later, being able to get that clarity. Understanding clear, open, honest communication.
'I think there's a lot of love coming from us. I think there's a lot of appreciation on their part as well. And I think that as early as possible is the ideal scenario.”
Stafford is a former No. 1 overall pick who has been with the Rams since 2021 and led Los Angeles to victory in Super Bowl LVI.
However, after the loss to the Eagles last week, the 36-year-old did not rule out retiring from the NFL.
Stafford said he “sure feels like” he's capable of playing “good football.” But the quarterback revealed that he would take some time before deciding on his next move.
“As far as my future is concerned, there are 30 minutes left until the last game, so I will take some time to think about it,” he said. “But I feel like I was playing pretty well.”
