Luigi Mangione is incarcerated at a notorious federal prison in New York City known for its horrific conditions – and TMZ has been informed about his life behind bars.
Sources with direct knowledge tell us… Mangione is housed at MDC Brooklyn in “administrative segregation” – with a group of inmates separated from the general population because they require increased security.
In Mangione's case, he became infamous after he was arrested for the high-profile murder of the UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson – so he could be a target for other inmates. Hence the extra security.
According to our sources, Mangione is locked in a solitary cell with no one living with him. However, the cells are close together and the inmates often talk to each other.
We were told there are no TVs in the segregation unit…so there isn't much to do during the day.
Luigi gets a chance to stretch his legs… and enjoys an hour a day outside his cell in the recovery pen – a large cage where he is not handcuffed. According to our sources, there is sometimes a basketball or a stationary bike inside, depending on which cage is used.
For his entertainment, we are told that Luigi can buy an MP3 player and songs through the cash register – provided someone puts money into his account.
Inmates' spending per month is capped at $350 – but for the holidays they receive an additional $100 on top of their limit.
As you know… Luigi is accused of fatally shooting Thompson in Midtown Manhattan earlier this month – after which authorities dumped Mangione at MDC Brooklyn he was extradited back to NYC from Pennsylvania.
Luigi faces both state and federal murder charges… and he's allowed to meet with his lawyers while incarcerated at MDC Brooklyn.
Diddyis locked in the same prison … and the conditions there are not particularly good. But it sounds like Luigi has a pretty simple routine while he awaits trial.
