Man United 3-1 Southampton – PLAYER RATINGS: Amad Diallo is the ace in Ruben Amorim's group, but which defender was turned over? And who seemed dejected when they were hooked?

  • Amad Diallo scores a hat-trick in 12 minutes to avoid Man United's blushes
  • Southampton dominates the match but remains without points
  • LISTEN NOW: It's all starting! Is Everton where they deserve to be or are the club's fans deceived?

Man United were rescued by Amad Diallo when the 22-year-old scored a late hat-trick to turn Southampton around at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

The bottom of the Premier League surprised the home team when they took the lead just before half-time thanks to an own goal from Manuel Ugarte.

Ruben Amorim's side were heading for another humiliating defeat before Diallo equalized with eight minutes remaining.

And the Ivorian was the toast of Old Trafford as he scored twice more to seal victory for Man United.

So was it a one-man show for Man United or did others stand up? And who was to blame before Diallo's rescue act?

Mail Sport's NATHAN SALT was on hand to take a look at both sets of players…

MAN UNITED (4-2-3-1)

ANDRÉ ONANA 7 – He made two impressive saves in the first half to deny Tyler Dibling and then Mateus Nunes' follow-up. It is difficult to blame him for an own goal that flew past Manuel Ugarte. Southampton could have finished the game without him.

LENY YORO – 4.5

Picked up for what was only his third Premier League start this season and Kamaldeen Sulemana turned it around. He was chosen partly because his pace was expected to benefit United in this clash, but he really found it difficult to control Sulemana.

MATTHJIS DE LIGT – 6

Returned to the middle of the back three with Harry Maguire dropped, De Ligt was largely a solid presence and made some key blocks. He had a difficult moment where he hesitated to go for the ball and found himself frantically retreating to avoid being overtaken to gain pace.

LISANDRO MARTÍNEZ – 5.5

He was playing one-two with Mazraoui to help nullify Dibling's threat and considered himself lucky when the Southampton star snuck into the box, only to be denied by Onana. It helped keep the intensity of the game high at the end. Reserved.

AMAD DIALLO – 9

A rare bright spot for United on a night without much creativity until the screw was turned. Even on a night where the Ivorian's decision-making in the final third initially looked misguided, he produced three crucial moments of magic on a night when his teammates were well below par. The ace of Amorim's deck came out on top again.

KOBBIE MAINOO- 5

Retired at half-time after a 45-minute performance that went unnoticed and he lost the battle in midfield. He has improved a lot in recent weeks, but this was a bad night for the young midfielder as Southampton's Lesley Ugochukwu and Joe Aribo had their way.

MANUEL UGARTE – 5.5

A very frustrating night for the Uruguayan, who has recovered a lot in recent weeks. This was a night where everything that seemed to go wrong for him went wrong when the ball bounced off his back to give Southampton the first goal. He left before time shaking his head in frustration and disbelief at the performance.

NOUSSAIR MAZRAOUI – 6

He started at left back in what was his first game in that position since arriving at the club last summer. Many more experienced players on that team have been embarrassed by Tyler Dibling this season, but he kept the Southampton star honest. It means he has played in six positions this season (LB, LWB, CB, RB, RWB and No 10).

BRUNO FERNANDES – 6.5

He had an effort cleared off the line at the end of this contest after he tried to score one on Aaron Ramsdale. There's a reason he plays so often and it's because he never fools fans for his efforts. He felt he overreached at times and rushed some of his final balls when opportunities arose.

ALEJANDRO GARNACHO- 6

I had a golden chance at 0-0 thanks to a Rasmus Hojlund cutback and the game changed from then on as Southampton grew in their faith. I continued to seek solace in Amorim as he adjusts to a number 10 role that requires him to stay inside more than he is used to. He should have received an assist when he teed up Antony, who missed from two yards out.

RASMUS HOJLUND – 4

He managed just three touches in the Southampton box during 54 minutes on the pitch, but this was a night where the fans let him know he was not where he needed to be in quality. A long pass from Andre Onana caused him to groan loudly when he took too long to reach the ball. He looked dejected when he came out because he knew he was offside.

Manager

RUBEN AMORIM – 6.5

He struggled to stop pacing up and down his technical area before it had even started, so his step count will have been through the roof. He was bold in his substitutions but will be very frustrated by his players' application after the successes at Liverpool and Arsenal.

SUBSTITUTES

Antonio (by Kobbie Mainoo, 46) – 4

Joshua Zirkzee (substitute for Rasmus Hojlund, 54) – 6

Toby Collyer (by Manuel Ugarte, 54) – 6

Christian Eriksen (by Leny Yoro, 83)

Harry Maguire (by Noussair Mazraoui, 83)
