Nelly remains steadfast in the face of widespread criticism of his decision to stand in one of the presidential elections Donald TrumpThe official opening balls.
The rapper has received a lot of backlash since making the announcement ahead of his performance in Washington, DC on Monday. However, Nelly insists that his appearance is not about politics, but about respect for the office of the president.
During an interview with Willie DNelly addressed the consequences and said that it was not about making a political statement. He says he didn't know that he had to agree with Trump's political views in order to perform for him at his official swearing-in.
Nelly continued during the interview: “He’s the president. He won. That's why I'm not telling you who to vote for. He is the President of the United States, not the candidate for the United States.”
He continued… “I respect the office. It doesn't matter who is in office. If they can put their lives on the line for anyone in office, I can damn sure stand for anyone in office.”
Many have accused the rapper of taking the gig just for his paycheck, a claim Nelly quickly refuted. “I don’t do this for money. I’m doing this because it’s an honor… That’s what this is about.”

In 2020, we released Nelly and Cedric the Entertainer and got a pretty good overview of their views on Trump. Seems like Nelly hasn't changed much about his political stance since then and laughed out loud when Cedric yelled “f*** Trump!”
But like he said… it's not about politics.
