Prosecutors are now “carefully reviewing” a file of evidence concerning a Premier League footballer accused of rape.
Crown Prosecution Service officials will decide whether to charge the internationally known man after the Metropolitan Police provide them with a file of evidence.
No timeline has been set for next steps. The player, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, is in his 30s and has continued to play for his team despite initially being detained in July 2022.
The investigation relates to crimes allegedly involving two victims and said to have been committed between 2021 and 2023. CPS officials have revealed they are “carefully reviewing” the file.
It is understood that any decision to lay charges will be made independently and in accordance with the Crown Prosecutors' Code. It is common for three to six months to pass before decisions are made in similar cases. If charges were brought, the case would normally go to court and the player would be invited to plead guilty. If they were eliminated, they would be free to continue their career.
On Wednesday, the Metropolitan Police confirmed that a file had been handed over to the CPS.
