RANGERS CONFIDENTIAL: Why two stars are heading for the Ibrox exit, the main obstacle to bringing back Joe Aribo and why the Old Firm red card was complete nonsense

Rabbi Matondo is almost out the door at Ibrox, and Cyriel Dessers could still be hot on his trail.

Matondo is closing in on a loan move to Coventry City, with an option to buy included in the deal. The Wales international moved to Ibrox in the summer of 2022 but has made just eight appearances in all competitions this season.

Rangers boss Philippe Clement revealed last week that the club will need to sell players during this transfer window.

Following Alex Lowry's move to Wycombe, midfielder Kieran Dowell is looking for a new club, while striker Dessers would be allowed to leave, with Leganés the latest team to show interest.

Currently 15th in La Liga, the Spanish club is working behind the scenes to put together a financial package that could seal the deal.

The Nigerian international scored his first Ibrox hat-trick in the 5-0 rout of Fraserburgh in the Scottish Cup.

However, Dessers, replaced by Hamza Igamane in the starting XI, wants to play every week, with Cagliari, Empoli and St Etienne reported to be interested.

Leganés sporting director Txema Indias was interested in signing Dessers before the striker moved to Rangers. And Spanish publication AS claims interest has now been revived.

While Rangers want to make some money on a permanent transfer, Leganés cannot afford the price. Eager to reach a loan deal, even that could be out of reach.

With Brazilian striker Danilo forced to see a specialist after suffering an injury in the recent win over St Johnstone, Clement is reluctant to let Dessers go without having a suitable replacement ready.

Despite falling down the pecking order, the 30-year-old has scored 16 goals in 33 games. And when asked if he still saw a Rangers future for Dessers, the Rangers boss hedged his bets.

“That's a tough question,” Clement said. 'If Cyriel leaves, you will have to replace him. And it must be at least of the same quality.

'We will see in the next two weeks what happens. I know that if he is here he will give everything for the club. And if he leaves, he will have to be replaced by someone of at least the same quality.'

Communication is key as Mailer brings his wealth of experience to Ibrox

The new Rangers' head of communications, Greig Mailer, will get to work at Ibrox in early April.

Previously head of marketing and communications at the SFA, Mailer had a brief spell at Hibernian before moving south to work alongside Rangers chief executive Patrick Stewart at Manchester United in corporate communications.

Currently working at Brentford in the English Premier League, where he serves as director of corporate affairs, the Scot brings a wealth of experience at the top of British football.

He will come to help with messages from chairman Fraser Thornton and Mailer's former Old Trafford colleague Stewart.

A Rangers return? It's just not like that for Joe

Rangers fans should pay no attention to rumors about Joe Aribo returning to Ibrox this summer. It won't happen.

The midfielder moved from Glasgow to Southampton in 2023 for £6m and helped the south coast club win promotion to the Premier League last season.

With Saints currently bottom of the English top flight and destined to go back down, they will look to push ahead at the end of this campaign.

With one year left on his contract, Southampton believe they can recover what they paid for him.

Although Rangers could come up with the transfer fee for the player who scored in the 2022 Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt, the overall package would be financially prohibitive.

The Nigeria international reportedly earns £70,000 a week and won't expect to earn a penny less in what will be his last big contract in the game.

With the Rangers trying to reduce their cap spend while investing in younger players, a return for Aribo isn't even worthy of consideration.

Istanbul could be a destination, as Besiktas have always admired the 28-year-old.

Unsatisfied talent Lowry has a lot to prove in England

Good luck to Alex Lowry who left Rangers earlier this week for the bright lights of Wycombe Wanderers.

After signing for an undisclosed fee, the 21-year-old joins a club fighting for promotion to the top of English League One.

But he leaves Rangers with an unfulfilled talent and a player whose poor attitude cost him any chance of breaking into the first team.

When Lowry initially broke into the senior team a few years ago as a teenager, he was considered a player with enormous potential.

A creative young attacking midfielder, his vision and guile looked to be a huge asset to Rangers in the years to come.

However, after just 14 appearances for the senior team and a failed loan spell at Hearts last season, he now finds himself banned.

The conversation around the Rangers these past few years has been about how Lowry's attitude has hindered his progress and obvious ability.

This was something that was picked up at Hearts when he played under Steven Naismith last season.

Throughout his time at both clubs, Mail Sport understands that punctuality was not a strong point. There were several occasions when Lowry was late to practices and team meetings.

Speaking in 2023, Lowry insisted his laid-back demeanor perhaps simply gave the wrong impression at times.

Now he heads to Wycombe as a young man with a point to prove. Regardless of what he achieved in England, he never made it at Rangers.

Potter's sacking in Old Firm clash was foolish

It is no surprise that Rangers are appealing the decision to issue a red card to Jo Potter in the Sky Sports Cup semi-final against Celtic last Sunday.

The manager's dismissal early in the second half at New Douglas Park was so bizarre it threatened to overshadow a 2-1 win that takes them into the final against Hibs.

Two goals in three minutes, from Rio Hardy and Katie Wilkinson, had just put the Rangers in control of the tie when the ball went out of play in front of the dugouts.

Thinking, like many others, that it was a Rangers throw-in, Potter kicked the ball and held it behind her back as Celtic defender Emma Lawton approached.

Referee Abbie Hendry then approached Potter and showed him a red card, presumably because she thought the Rangers manager was guilty of guile.

Rangers boss Potter, a far right winger, was shocked when she received the red card in the Old Firm game.

Potter later said he wanted an explanation from Hendry, who is one of 24 Scottish officials on Fifa's international list this year. The referee also cautioned Celtic coach Elena Sadiku.

“I'm not sure why I can't hold the ball on our throw-in and give it to my own player,” Potter said. 'I looked towards the fourth referee and she said: “At most it's a yellow. “It's not a red card.” The referee obviously didn't agree because he took the card out of his pocket very quickly. She looks a little silly putting it back on and changing it.

If common sense prevails, the decision will be overturned and Potter will be able to reflect only on the quality of his team's performance, the highlight of which was Wilkinson's goal, a superb free-kick past the goalkeeper.

Lawton scored a consolation goal for Celtic but it was too late to alter the result, continuing Rangers' promising start to the new year and giving them the chance to win the League Cup for a third successive season.

If Caixinha can't get Windass, he will naturally turn to… Neymar!

Pedro Caixinha is an endless source of fascination for Rangers fans, the media and anyone who has dealt with him during his eccentric and ill-fated spell in charge at Ibrox.

The latest stop on the Portuguese coach's never-ending global itinerary is Santos, where he has teamed up with former Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos.

Caixinha recalled Morelos from his loan at Atlético Nacional, but the player had such a good time with the Colombian club that he wants to return. He has not appeared for Santos in their first two games of the season.

Then there is the story of Josh Windass. Two weeks ago, it was reported that Santos had made an offer for the Sheffield Wednesday player, whose spell at Rangers several years ago included an inadvertent touchline tackle on Caixinha.

That offer was rejected and, according to the latest information from South America, the Brazilian club has decided to abandon its interest in Windass and instead pursue… Neymar.

Which is a big step forward for the books. Neymar has a lot to be proud of in his swashbuckling career, but being second choice behind Josh Windass in the international transfer market probably isn't one of them.

The 32-year-old Brazilian superstar joined Al Hilal from Paris Saint-Germain in 2023, but has made so few appearances for the Saudi club, mainly due to injury, that he is not even registered to play in their league.

Chicago Fire were linked with a move for the former Barcelona player, but Santos was his first club and an emotional return to Brazil at this stage of his career would be appealing.

Santos has submitted a formal proposal, Al Hilal is weighing a response and Caixinha wonders if he will soon be working with one of the best and most expensive forwards in football.

The question is whether Caixinha will be able to persuade one of his former Rangers players to be Neymar's teammate in Sao Paulo. If Morelos and Windass are out of his reach, who will he turn to next? Martyn Waghorn is rumored to be available having terminated his contract with Northampton Town.
