The reason why AC Milan will not be able to sign Marcus Rashford and Kyle Walker on loan has been revealed.
The Italian giants are favorites to sign the Man United and Man City stars during the January window as both players seek an exit from Manchester.
Milan are clear favorites for Walker's signature at the moment and are prepared to make a formal offer for the City captain in the coming hours.
Meanwhile, Milan's interest in Rashford was revealed earlier this month, after the striker admitted he could seek a new challenge away from Man United.
However, the club will have to make a decision on which England star it wants to bring in, due to some Serie A registration rules.
The club only has one place left in its squad for a British player after the change in regulations after Brexit.
AC Milan are interested in signing both Kyle Walker (left) and Marcus Rashford (right) in January.
However, the recent Italian Super Cup champions will have to choose between the two stars.
The restrictions say Italian teams can only bring two non-EU team members each year, with one extra English or Albanian ace allowed.
Milan signed Serbia international Strahinja Pavlovic and Brazilian star Emerson Royal in the summer to fill their two non-EU spots.
Walker was left out of City's squad for the 8-0 FA Cup victory over Salford City and did not take part in training on Sunday.
Milan consultant Zlatan Ibrahimovic has played a key role in the negotiations and the Italian club are hopeful of reaching an agreement with City before rival competition comes to the fore.
His prolific reputation as one of the best defenders in the world has also continued to attract the interest of Saudi Arabian teams, with a host of big-spending teams, including Al Nassr, Al Ittihad and Al Ahli, all showing interest.
Walker could decide to follow his former City team-mate Riyad Mahrez to the oil-rich kingdom and there would be no shortage of suitors who could offer the veteran a huge salary as he enters the twilight years of his career.
It is understood he is interested in staying in Europe to look after his family and save his marriage to Annie Kilner.
Meanwhile, Rashford's brother and agent, Dwaine Maynard, was in Milan last week to talk to the newly crowned Italian Super Cup winners.
Further talks are expected with AC Milan regarding the possibility of signing Rashford.
Both Rashford and Walker, pictured in 2023, are looking for a new challenge in their careers.
Borussia Dortmund is Rashford's other big suitor, while Juventus and Galatasaray are also interested.
AC Milan currently sit in eighth place in Serie A and have struggled to score goals this season.
The Italian giants' problems led to the departure of coach Paulo Fonesca last month, with Sergio Conceicao since taking over.
Conceicao led AC Milan to a 3-2 victory over city rivals Inter in the Italian Super Cup on Monday, with England international Tammy Abraham scoring the winning goal in added time.
