Rio Ferdinand slams decision to rule out Matthijs de Ligt's first game for Man United as pundit claims Rangers star 'folded like a deck of cards'

Former Man United defender Rio Ferdinand has criticized the decision to rule out a Matthijs de Ligt goal against Rangers in their crucial Europa League clash.

The Dutch defender appeared to have given the hosts the lead in the first half following a corner kick in the 24th minute at Old Trafford.

His header from a corner was disallowed by the referees due to a foul by central defender Leny Yoro.

Yoro was deemed to have pushed Robin Propper from the set-piece, and the VAR officials stuck to the on-field referee's decision.

“I'm not going to allow that,” Ferdinand said on TNT Sports.

'That's so soft, you just touched it, you leaned on it lightly.

Fellow commentator Ally McCoist backed Ferdinand's take on the controversial incident.

“I don't disagree with you,” McCoist said. “But I think once the referee says it, it will be enough for him not to change his mind.”

Ferdinand continued his complaints about the decision about X, writing “Never a fault…”. and calling the referee's decision “nonsense.”

The first half at Old Trafford ended goalless after De Ligt's shot was disallowed, and Rubén Amorim's team could not score.

Both Man United and Rangers came into the clash hoping to be in the top eight of the Europa League.

A top-eight finish would secure automatic qualification for the round of 16, thus avoiding the need for a two-leg playoff next month.
