Robbie Fowler called Mohamed Salah's absence from last year's shortlist of 30 Ballon d'Or finalists a “travesty” and an “absolute joke.”
The Egyptian scored his 22nd goal of the season on Tuesday night as Liverpool confirmed their place in the Champions League last 16 with a 2-1 win over Lille.
Salah is an early favorite to win the coveted individual honor in 2025 following his remarkable start to the campaign, but Fowler believes the 32-year-old should have been recognized for his performances last campaign.
“Daniel (Sturridge) mentioned he wasn't in the top three, I think it was a travesty that he wasn't in the top 30 last year,” the former Reds striker told Amazon Prime. 'That's an absolute joke.
'He is a phenomenal player. It doesn't seem technically brilliant, but just because you're technically brilliant doesn't mean you're going to be brilliant all the time.
“If you are not technically brilliant, you can still be brilliant and Mo Salah is that player, he will disappear and out of nowhere something incredible will happen and Salah will be behind it.”

The 32-year-old is the favorite to win the prestigious award in 2025, having enjoyed a remarkable first half of the season.
Salah currently leads the race for the Premier League Golden Boot with 18 goals, one ahead of Erling Haaland and three more than Alexander Isak.
His incredible production has added further panic to the uncertainty over his contract among Liverpool fans. Along with Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, the striker is currently free to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs, with his Anfield contract expiring at the end of the season.
On Tuesday night, after becoming the first Liverpool player to score 50 goals in Europe, he said: “Hopefully it won't be the last, but I'm very proud of it.” I wasn't focused on that before the game.
“They have a really good game plan and they were undefeated for 21 games, so they are a pretty tough team.” “I'm glad we managed to win that game.”
Asked if he would stay at Liverpool to add to his impressive tally, with his contract expiring in the summer, Salah replied: “I'm not sure about that, but I'll do my best.”
